Danae Estrela · Live
A voice carrying the winds of the Cape Verde Islands and the alleyways of Coimbra.
Danae Estrela was born in Havana, Cuba, and grew up in the Cape Verde Islands. Her musical identity is deeply shaped by this unique connection between different cultural worlds. She later moved to Coimbra, Portugal, where she recorded her debut album Condição de Louco in 2003.
Released in 2005 by Norte Sul / Valentim de Carvalho, the album was celebrated by the Portuguese press as one of the musical revelations of the year. The renowned Blitz magazine selected it as one of the best Portuguese albums of 2005.
In 2006, she collaborated with award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker Šarūnas Bartas, contributing music to the film Eastern Drift, later presented at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Between 2018 and 2020, Danae developed her third album, Num Tempo Ki Ka Tem Tempo, produced with two-time Grammy Award winner Marco Bosco. The album weaves Cape Verdean musical traditions with contemporary influences from jazz, folk and world music.
Since 2022, Danae has been based in Berlin, developing a new chapter of «Danae e os novos crioulos» — an ensemble continuing the original vision of the "New Creoles": creating music through encounters across cultures and traditions. This Berlin chapter was made possible through the dedication of percussionist Raimund Engelhardt, who brought the new ensemble together and keeps it alive on and off stage.
Music is encounter. Every song is born where worlds meet.
